On the initiative of Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board (ATCB) and the Amsterdam tourist branch, 2007 was proclaimed the year of Amsterdam, Feel the Rhythm - music & dance. Throughout the entire year, the city offers a great number of events, from classical to modern music and dance. This music and dance theme will also be used actively outside Amsterdam for the promotion of Holland, as a nationwide theme year.
This website shows you all the highlights within the scope of Amsterdam, Feel the Rhythm. The theme year programme is divided into four categories:
Classical & Modern Music
Muziekgebouw aan .t IJ, an architectural and acoustic tour de force, presents the Gaudeamus Interpreter Competition and the Piano Competition. The world-famous Nederlandse Opera offers a number of beautiful productions in the Muziektheater, such as John Adams. Doctor Atomic and Puccini.s classic Madame Butterfly.
Pop / Jazz / World Music
Amsterdam is a city with a dazzling music scene that never seems to be satisfied. In 2007, Lionel Richie visits the Heineken Music Hall and pop temples Paradiso and Melkweg accommodate many famous and up-and-coming artists. The Amsterdam Roots Festival once again features top artists on the field of world music. Or pay a visit to the centre of jazz, the breeding ground for new initiatives: Bimhuis.
Classical & Contemporary Dance
On the occasion of the 75th birthday of their world-famous resident choreographer, Het Nationale Ballet presents the Hans van Manen Festival. Renowned dance groups as the Kirov Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Stuttgarter Ballett and the Nederlands Dans Theater will give acte de présence. If you.d prefer to see a wide selection of dance styles, then visit the Julidans festival, during which many young talents will present their works.
Dance
Experience the Dutch dance scene with Sensation White, an incredible event with a magnificent setting, a crowd dressed in white and the best DJs. Or get to know Amsterdam as a world-famous entertainment centre in glamour club Jimmy Woo, pop temple Paradiso, the groundbreaking Sugar Factory or the internationally oriented Supperclub.
